Munich Restaurant Trends: September 2026
Shoo Loong Kan held Munich's #1 position for the entire month — 28 of 30 days at the maximum score of 100. The Hofbräuhaus absorbed 871 new reviews during Oktoberfest and barely moved in the rankings. A Michelin-starred chef's new restaurant went from obscurity at #176 to #11 in the final two weeks. And LUMI Asian Cuisine, with just 94 reviews, cracked the top 10. September was the month the data proved its own thesis: momentum and fame are different measurements.
The Reign Continues
Shoo Loong Kan Hot Pot München held Munich's top position for the second consecutive month — the first time any restaurant has done this since we began tracking. It spent 28 of 30 September days at rank #1, dipping briefly to #2 on September 6 and 7 before reclaiming the maximum SBS score of 100. It entered September with 133 reviews and closed it with 240 — adding 107 reviews in a single month while maintaining a 4.8-star rating. The gap between #1 and #2 (SBS 100 vs. 76) remained wide for most of the month.

Seven of the top 10 are different from August — but the churn isn't chaos. The venues that departed (VOLLATHS BAGEL BAR, Zimt, La Mocca, Talstation, Nice) experienced natural momentum corrections: their proportional growth rates normalised as they accumulated more total reviews. The venues that arrived are at earlier points on the same growth curve.
Restaurant JAN: Munich's Fastest Climber
The most significant ranking event of September happened in the second half of the month. Restaurant JAN – Jan Hartwig entered September at rank #176 with an SBS barely above zero. By September 30 it sat at #11, with an SBS of 13.4 and 363 reviews. The arithmetic: +165 rank positions in a single month, almost entirely in the final two weeks.
Jan Hartwig spent years as head chef at Atelier in the Bayerischer Hof, where he held three Michelin stars. Restaurant JAN is his own venture — and the review velocity since mid-September suggests the Munich dining public is paying attention. The average SBS score in the first half of September was 0.4. In the second half it was 8.5. That kind of step-change inflection is rare in our data and almost always signals a genuine opening moment rather than a marketing spike.
| Restaurant | Movement | From → To | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restaurant JAN – Jan Hartwig | +165 | #176 → #11 | ⭐4.8 | 363 |
| Fitzroy Munich | +111 | #202 → #91 | ⭐4.7 | 1,002 |
| THE CLOUD by Käfer | +100 | #208 → #108 | ⭐4.5 | 379 |
| ABACCO'S Steakhouse | +85 | #177 → #92 | ⭐4.5 | 4,008 |
| IRMI | +82 | #209 → #127 | ⭐4.6 | 1,075 |
| Restaurant Käfer-Schänke | +60 | #150 → #90 | ⭐4.5 | 1,404 |
The climbers table has an Oktoberfest signature. THE CLOUD by Käfer, ABACCO'S Steakhouse, and Restaurant Käfer-Schänke are all established venues associated with the Oktoberfest period — Käfer has one of the most sought-after Oktoberfest tents. Their surge in September is a seasonal effect the data captures accurately: the crowd arrives, the reviews follow.
The Oktoberfest Paradox
Oktoberfest opened on 20 September 2026. The venues that absorbed the most reviews were, predictably, the landmarks. The venues that climbed the rankings were not.
| Restaurant | New Reviews in September | Total Reviews | Rating | SBS (end of month) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hofbräuhaus München | +871 | 110,449 | ⭐4.3 | 0.6 |
| 60 seconds to napoli Schwabing | +599 | 1,654 | ⭐4.7 | 76.0 |
| Augustiner-Keller | +304 | 40,191 | ⭐4.4 | 0.8 |
| Ca Go Restaurant | +254 | 4,280 | ⭐4.9 | 0.7 |
| Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm | +216 | 16,602 | ⭐4.4 | 2.1 |
| Rice Garden – Modern Vietnamese | +210 | 3,064 | ⭐4.9 | 14.7 |
| Hofbräukeller | +195 | 9,340 | ⭐4.4 | 4.2 |
| Wildmosers Restaurant | +163 | 4,020 | ⭐4.8 | 9.2 |
The Hofbräuhaus received 871 new reviews in a single month — roughly 29 per day — and ended September with an SBS of 0.6, well outside the top 100. At 110,000 total reviews, even a month of exceptional volume barely moves the proportional growth needle. The SBS formula is doing exactly what it should: distinguishing between volume at scale and genuine momentum.
The contrast with 60 seconds to napoli Schwabing is stark. It collected 599 reviews in September — fewer than the Hofbräuhaus — but sits at #2 in the rankings with SBS 76.0. The difference is base size: 1,654 total reviews versus 110,449. When a restaurant with 1,000 reviews accumulates 600 in a month, it is experiencing a meaningful acceleration. When a landmark absorbs the same volume into a six-figure base, almost nothing changes in relative terms.
Hidden Gems
The pattern established in August continued into September: the smallest restaurants by review count sit at the top of the momentum rankings. LUMI Asian Cuisine entered the top 10 with just 94 reviews — making it the second-smallest restaurant by review count ever to reach the top 10 in our dataset, after Zimt Indisches (88 reviews, #7 in August).
| Rank | Restaurant | Reviews | Rating | District |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #6 | OLEA | 95 | ⭐4.5 | Glockenbachviertel |
| #7 | LUMI Asian Cuisine | 94 | ⭐4.9 | Schwabing |
| #3 | Galata Restaurant | 140 | ⭐4.7 | Nymphenburg |
| #17 | 794 JIDAI | 142 | ⭐4.8 | Altstadt |
| #19 | "frex" Restaurant & Bar | 128 | ⭐4.7 | Lehel |
LUMI in Schwabing holds a 4.9-star rating across 94 reviews — the highest rating in the entire top 20 at that review count. Galata Restaurant in Nymphenburg serves Mezze and Mediterranean food and has climbed to #3 without previously appearing in our top 20; it is a brand-new entrant to the tracked pool. 794 JIDAI is a fusion restaurant in Altstadt whose SBS rose consistently across the second half of September (+3.4 points, first half to second half average), suggesting sustained new-visitor momentum rather than a single event.
District Leaders
Schwabing is the strongest district in September's data by volume: three top-10 restaurants — 60 seconds to napoli Schwabing (#2), LUMI (#7), and VIERUNDDREI (#4) — all sit in its postal codes. Maxvorstadt holds two (MAUI #9, The Indian Room #10). Schwanthalerhöhe retains its #1 by a commanding margin.
What to Watch in October
Oktoberfest ends on 5 October. The venues that surged on seasonal foot traffic — Käfer-Schänke, THE CLOUD, ABACCO'S — will likely normalise back toward their pre-festival positions. The question is whether the international restaurants that grew through September on their own momentum hold ground when the tourist volume recedes.
Restaurant JAN is the most interesting data point to watch. The second-half surge in September represents the opening wave of reviews from a new fine-dining venue that Munich has been anticipating. Whether that translates into sustained top-10 presence or a one-month spike depends on whether ongoing review velocity can match the initial burst. At 363 reviews and 4.8 stars, the quality signal is strong.
Shoo Loong Kan is now approaching a critical inflection point. It has 240 reviews and has held #1 for two consecutive months. As it accumulates more total reviews, the proportional growth rate will naturally decrease — unless absolute monthly review intake keeps pace. The October data will tell us whether it transitions into a long-term fixture or begins the normalisation that claimed OLEA and Zimt before it.
One structural note: the tracked pool expanded from 224 venues at the start of September to 276 by month end — the result of broader keyword search coverage deployed in late September. A larger pool makes ranking positions harder to hold and brings previously invisible restaurants into view. Expect some new names to appear in October's data.
